<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
It's the event of a lifetime! The first solar eclipse to go coast to coast since 1918 (June 8th). The last total solar eclipse to touch the United States was February 26, 1979 and it was in a corner of the northwest and on a cloudy day.<br />
<br />
Almost everyone in the United States will be able to observe at least a 50% partial eclipse. Many will see much more.<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://3.bp.blogspot.com/-V6CfEobQTbQ/WYslfqfLecI/AAAAAAAAIfw/q9qGyvr_e9UFjdf5dN62vG2X1ltUX2sBQCLcBGAs/s1600/eclipse_map.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="512" data-original-width="1024" height="200" src="https://3.bp.blogspot.com/-V6CfEobQTbQ/WYslfqfLecI/AAAAAAAAIfw/q9qGyvr_e9UFjdf5dN62vG2X1ltUX2sBQCLcBGAs/s400/eclipse_map.jpg" width="400" /></a></div>
Young children may be totally unaware of what is going on. It is our job to help them observe and understand.<br />
<br />
First....SAFETY!<br />
This is so important, but it is not hard.<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://1.bp.blogspot.com/-Rf1glNgP9-Y/WYs2vQnh_-I/AAAAAAAAIhQ/-ruLrP-E6AE1jIIe0C7m6E4qEjXcsfD1gCLcBGAs/s1600/eclipse%2Beyes2.png" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="1046" data-original-width="787" height="400" src="https://1.bp.blogspot.com/-Rf1glNgP9-Y/WYs2vQnh_-I/AAAAAAAAIhQ/-ruLrP-E6AE1jIIe0C7m6E4qEjXcsfD1gCLcBGAs/s400/eclipse%2Beyes2.png" width="300" /></a></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
</div>
<br />
Start by getting proper eye protection (young children are going to want to look). Sunglasses are not enough. I made my own glasses with lenses from a welding supply store. You need a lens #14 or higher.<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://2.bp.blogspot.com/-Zw4YkLhIKC0/WYsrGHygbtI/AAAAAAAAIgQ/q6kBxd9GTgg8htTgzdV_l_EHNjBdBoOpwCLcBGAs/s1600/eclipse%2Bsafe.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="720" data-original-width="960" height="300" src="https://2.bp.blogspot.com/-Zw4YkLhIKC0/WYsrGHygbtI/AAAAAAAAIgQ/q6kBxd9GTgg8htTgzdV_l_EHNjBdBoOpwCLcBGAs/s400/eclipse%2Bsafe.jpg" width="400" /></a></div>
Just take your lenses and place them into a larger piece of cardboard. Attach with duck tape. This will help young ones control the placement of the lens over their eyes. They will be less likely to have the lens slip off of their eyes.<br />
<div style="text-align: center;">
<span style="font-size: x-small;">If you go online to buy some, be sure they are not fake (apparently fake glasses are popping up everywhere)</span></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
</div>
<br />
<div style="text-align: center;">
<span style="font-size: large;">During the brief time of totality you can look with your naked eyes. </span></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
For a second way.....where you will not be looking at the sun at all, a pin box viewer is quick and easy to make. You have all the supplies you need on hand. I used a box, but you can get away with just a white piece of paper and a dark (stiff and won't let the sun through) paper. I poked my hole with a bamboo skewer. Aim the box so the sun shines through your hole.<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://1.bp.blogspot.com/-ze7j_TBO5o4/WYsuYWGD0BI/AAAAAAAAIgc/clxvsfIZf_I6KGu3ahmwM34dkel7zu4NACLcBGAs/s1600/eclipse%2Bpin%2Bbox.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="791" data-original-width="960" height="328" src="https://1.bp.blogspot.com/-ze7j_TBO5o4/WYsuYWGD0BI/AAAAAAAAIgc/clxvsfIZf_I6KGu3ahmwM34dkel7zu4NACLcBGAs/s400/eclipse%2Bpin%2Bbox.jpg" width="400" /></a></div>
<br />
Now that you have seen what is happening, how do you explain it to a child? Hands on is always the best method. I made this interactive model using a paper plate to trace my sun and moon. My sun had triangles glued to the back to show the corona. You could make the moon just a wee bit smaller and that would work too. If you want a printable pattern, you can find the pattern by clicking <a href="https://www.teacherspayteachers.com/Product/Solar-Eclipse-Interactive-Model-3324001" target="_blank">here</a>.<br />

<br />
I like the video clip <a href="https://www.space.com/33797-total-solar-eclipse-2017-guide.html" target="_blank">here.</a> I like the idea of making my own eclipse with a flashlight and a quarter. You can find instructions <a href="https://www.education.com/activity/article/solar-eclipse/" target="_blank">here</a>. <br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
</div>
<br />
I have a stack of books ready to read.<br />
<table align="center" cellpadding="0" cellspacing="0" class="tr-caption-container" style="margin-left: auto; margin-right: auto; text-align: center;"><tbody>
<tr><td style="text-align: center;"><a href="https://dawnpub.com/our-books/moon-of-my-own/" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: auto; margin-right: auto;" target="_blank"><img border="0" data-original-height="491" data-original-width="600" height="261" src="https://2.bp.blogspot.com/-9fpkkwnZ254/WZOWWMXEItI/AAAAAAAAIjk/rYQiTp9KV2QMsZlk0zyzgnhHDCvwmyr0wCEwYBhgL/s320/MOON_COVER.jpg" width="320" /></a></td></tr>
<tr><td class="tr-caption" style="text-align: center;"><a href="https://dawnpub.com/our-books/moon-of-my-own/" target="_blank">One of my favorites from Dawn Publications.</a></td></tr>
</tbody></table>
<br />
There will be waiting around time as the moon makes its way across the sun. How much wait time do you have? Check out this table for times because the fun doesn't need to be just the few minutes of totality....<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://3.bp.blogspot.com/-3mtHK8omJE4/WZUOLtEp76I/AAAAAAAAIj0/6tWx51kd9JUDQBwmmFLe21pZ6xuq1ZsrwCLcBGAs/s1600/Slide28.PNG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="1046" data-original-width="787" height="640" src="https://3.bp.blogspot.com/-3mtHK8omJE4/WZUOLtEp76I/AAAAAAAAIj0/6tWx51kd9JUDQBwmmFLe21pZ6xuq1ZsrwCLcBGAs/s640/Slide28.PNG" width="480" /></a></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
</div>
I will start our fun before first contact. I want to give my students a chance to test their viewer, make a pinbox, and see the sun before the moon takes it's first nibble (first contact) out of the sun. We will observe, record, do an activity (read a book, play a game, make a model), then repeat. We will take breaks from observing for several reasons. First students will get antsy if all you do is watch, second they will be amazed at the difference each time you look, third they will be excited about what is happening and more likely to be engaged with an activity related to the eclipse. All of this will increase the amount they will retain in their memories.<br />
<br />
Two activities I will be doing is rocket building and making a model of the solar system.<br />

What else can you do? Eat of course...along with Sun Chips and Milky Way bars you may want to make these tasty treats. Can you see the shadow of the moon (half grape) and the corona of the sun (banana with yogurt glue)?<br />

In honor of Earth Day this month, I am going to step up on my soapbox for a bit and tell you that I believe in order to take care of our planet we need to reach out and <span style="font-size: x-large;"><i><b>touch</b></i></span> our planet.<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
</div>

<br />
If there is one thing I am passionate about in education it is getting kids outside. That's one reason for my tag line....where everyone is dancing their merry kinder kapers. <b><i>Movement....Excitement....Curiosity</i></b>. Hopefully you can catch the vision and see those little ones "dancing" about outside having a wonderfully educational time.</div>

<div style="text-align: center;">
<a href="http://richardlouv.com/blog/every-teacher-can-be-a-natural-teacher/" target="_blank"><b><i>Richard Louv</i></b><i><b> </b></i></a> affirms all that I believe to be true about children and getting them outside. He is the author of <a href="http://richardlouv.com/" target="_blank"><u>Last Child in the Woods: Saving Children from Nature-Deficit Disorder</u>.</a> He reminds us that,</div>

<b><span style="color: #274e13;"><i>"Passion is lifted from the earth itself by the muddy hands of the young; it travels along grass-stained sleeves to the heart. <br />
Can we take time from our school day to explore? Of course!! Is it common core?? YES!!<br />
<br />
Does it need to be work? No! <br />
<br />
<div style="text-align: center;">
<b><span style="color: #274e13;"><i>"If getting our kids out into nature is a search for perfection, or is one more chore, then the belief in perfection or the chore defeats the joy. And it's a lot more fun"</i></span></b></div>

Try a scavenger hunt...what interesting things can you find in your schoolyard?<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/-x-eXMmxbZUM/Uz0NXlGm5eI/AAAAAAAAEJ0/6qY9xJQYHi0/s1600/Butterflytent-028-3148340781-O.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="266" src="https://4.bp.blogspot.com/-x-eXMmxbZUM/Uz0NXlGm5eI/AAAAAAAAEJ0/6qY9xJQYHi0/s1600/Butterflytent-028-3148340781-O.jpg" width="400" /></a></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/-yu04qUazIps/Uz0NtrAqKVI/AAAAAAAAEJ8/RbCaXcotdG4/s1600/Butterflytent-029-3148345232-O.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="266" src="https://2.bp.blogspot.com/-yu04qUazIps/Uz0NtrAqKVI/AAAAAAAAEJ8/RbCaXcotdG4/s1600/Butterflytent-029-3148345232-O.jpg" width="400" /></a></div>
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">

Can you collect things (perhaps with a camera)? Can you sort them? Can you count them? Is there more of one thing...or perhaps you could compare colors? What about Kindergarten conversations.....what are your students excited about...are they asking questions? Are they taking turns, and carrying the conversations on through multiple exchanges? What did they find...can you help them take their learning in another direction? Did your students record their findings (in a journal, chart, graph, table)?<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
</div>
<br />
Can I do it if I live in the city? Yes again.<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/-lWuoBoJyIk4/UzzPW32nmBI/AAAAAAAAEHU/e5NxjVA5_qg/s1600/DSC_0129.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="267" src="https://3.bp.blogspot.com/-lWuoBoJyIk4/UzzPW32nmBI/AAAAAAAAEHU/e5NxjVA5_qg/s1600/DSC_0129.JPG" width="400" /></a></div>
Learn to use the tools of a scientist or naturalist. Above we were learning to read a thermometer, so we could test which color was the warmest to wear.<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/-4Duutod8VrI/UzzR1x48HJI/AAAAAAAAEHs/fNL89qz--Ho/s1600/DSC_0151.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="640" src="https://2.bp.blogspot.com/-4Duutod8VrI/UzzR1x48HJI/AAAAAAAAEHs/fNL89qz--Ho/s1600/DSC_0151.JPG" width="427" /></a></div>
<br />
Try growing some seeds. Clear cups are the best for seeing those roots go down.<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/-bIkwBNUMLeQ/Uz0iuWq668I/AAAAAAAAEKY/kR-kVdnxXl4/s1600/DSC_0353.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="267" src="https://4.bp.blogspot.com/-bIkwBNUMLeQ/Uz0iuWq668I/AAAAAAAAEKY/kR-kVdnxXl4/s1600/DSC_0353.JPG" width="400" /></a></div>
We planted sunflower seeds for St. Patrick's Day. My kinders were so so excited the day they sprouted. We left them untouched for a few days as they grew taller and taller. They watched the seed coats fall off and were fascinated! When we picked up the cups to look closer, my kinders discovered the roots down the sides of the cups and across the bottom. <i>They</i> discovered those things. Now we are learning the science words and writing our own nonfiction book about plants. Common Core...yes!<br />

<br />
It won't be long and we will be ordering our butterflies. I order a classroom set because everyone gets a turn to work with the caterpillars, everyone gets their own to examine closely, and I don't have to worry if a few don't make it (there are plenty of extras).<br />

When the butterflies finally emerge I set up this tent and we take turns getting up close and personal with those butterflies.<br />

<br />
Do you need research to help back up the importance of spending time outside? Check out the <a href="http://www.childrenandnature.org/" target="_blank">Children and Nature Network</a>. There is a wealth of information, from research to workshops to ideas to use.<br />
<br />
Whenever we go outside, we do have to have some rules. It is school after all. The rules are simple.<br />
1. It is not recess, so we do not get to run around or yell.<br />
2. Students must stay close to me or within the boundaries set for the day and activity.<br />
3. Students must not harm (pick, break, or squash) living things.<br />
4. Students must follow the directions given. Sometimes it will be okay to collect many things, most days we collect only 1 specimen (especially if we are collecting living things like leaves or seeds). <br />
<table align="center" cellpadding="0" cellspacing="0" class="tr-caption-container" style="margin-left: auto; margin-right: auto; text-align: center;"><tbody>
<tr><td style="text-align: center;"><a href="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/-zOYBOx77vZs/Uz0ajoDUBkI/AAAAAAAAEKI/y12ih_LV-cE/s1600/DSC_0759.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: auto; margin-right: auto;"><img border="0" height="267" src="https://4.bp.blogspot.com/-zOYBOx77vZs/Uz0ajoDUBkI/AAAAAAAAEKI/y12ih_LV-cE/s1600/DSC_0759.JPG" width="400" /></a></td></tr>
<tr><td class="tr-caption" style="text-align: center;">Pears from the trees at school (last September)</td></tr>
</tbody></table>
Do I need special equipment? No...You can get outside with none at all. There are a few things that might make it more fun.<br />
1. magnifying glass<br />
2. digital camera of some sort <br />
3. container for specimens<br />
4. paper, pencils, and a hard surface to write on (I use our whiteboards and binder clips)<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/-AO8WAzk9E9E/UzzR2ZxQdtI/AAAAAAAAEHw/thJyvPegktg/s1600/DSC_0149.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;">"<img border="0" height="428" src="https://4.bp.blogspot.com/-AO8WAzk9E9E/UzzR2ZxQdtI/AAAAAAAAEHw/thJyvPegktg/s1600/DSC_0149.JPG" width="640" /></a></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<b><span style="color: #274e13;"><i>"Time in nature is not leisure time; it's an essential investment in our children's health (and also, by the way, in our own).</i></span></b></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<span style="color: #274e13;"><i><br /></i></span></div>
<div style="text-align: left;">
<span style="color: #274e13;"><span style="color: black;">What do I use to help me plan our time outside? Along with the common core standards and our state guidelines, I love using <a href="http://www.projectwild.org/" target="_blank">Project Wild</a> and <a href="https://www.plt.org/" target="_blank">Project Learning Tree</a>. I also use the books by <a href="http://www.sharingnature.com/index.php" target="_blank">Joseph Cornell</a>. <a href="http://www.amazon.com/Sharing-Nature-Children-Anniversary-Edition/dp/1883220734/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&qid=1396515658&sr=8-1&keywords=sharing+nature+with+children" target="_blank"><u>Sharing Nature With Children</u></a> is my favorite. There are so many resources available, many unique to your location. Each National Park and many state parks have <a href="http://www.nationalparks.org/connect/npf-kids/junior-rangers" target="_blank">Junior Ranger</a> programs. The activities are adaptable for most grade levels. The Forest Service and BLM have lots of free resources as well. For unique picture books I turn to <a href="https://dawnpub.com/" target="_blank">Dawn Publications</a>. If you go to their website, not only will you find books, but <a href="https://dawnpub.com/" target="_blank">free activities</a> to go with them. It is a treasure trove of ideas!!</span></span></div>
<div style="text-align: left;">
<br />
But what do I really need? Time, natural curiosity, and a no worry attitude about dirt and bugs.<br />
<br />
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: left;">
</div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<span style="color: #274e13;"><i>"We have such a brief opportunity to pass on to our children our love for this earth, and to tell our stories. These are the moments when the world is made whole. In my children's memories, the adventures we've had together in nature will always exist."</i></span><br />

I have been inspired by some amazing teachers and I have stepped out of my comfort zone just a little bit and it has WONDERFUL!!<br />
<br />
I wanted to share what I have learned so I am hooking up with <a href="http://doodlebugsteaching.blogspot.com/2016/07/five-for-friday-link-up-july-22.html" target="_blank">Doddle Bugs Teaching</a> and <a href="http://doodlebugsteaching.blogspot.com/2016/07/five-for-friday-link-up-july-22.html" target="_blank">Five For Friday</a> to share my fun.<br />

<br />
First, I came to the SDE <i>I Teach</i> conferences to connect with teachers I have admired through their blogs, TpT stores, and following them on social media. I loved giving hugs and getting hugs and I want you to know that these amazing teachers are real people. They are the kindest and sweetest and smartest people I know. I learn so much!!<br />

Second, I came to learn. I attended so many classes. I loved every one and learned something new each time. It will take me all summer to really process everything that is swirling through my brain...but I know we will be doing more stem challenges (I attended two STEM workshops, one by Brooke Brown and one by Sandi Reyes). I have some GREAT ideas for fitting it all in and engage my students. We will be singing more (Thanks Debbie Clement) and making rekenreks (Thanks Deedee Wills).<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">

<br />
Third, I came to share my passion....outdoor learning! This was my first time presenting on such a large "stage". I was scared, nervous, petrified, and excited beyond words!! I loved it. I loved sharing something so close to my heart. I pitched my butterfly tent and we made pressed flower bookmarks (directions are here). I promised my Kinder participants I would post the blackline master for the food chain activity. You can find it <a href="https://drive.google.com/open?id=0B0-VQnQajmPuOVB5Mmhvdkh2N28" target="_blank">here</a>.<br />

Fourth, I came to spend some time with my best friend. I am lucky to have such a wonderful husband who loves me and supports me through all my crazy ideas.<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://4.bp.blogspot.com/-azX11ejDEM8/V5USHnPYtVI/AAAAAAAAIZI/wBFhkTQgaEkXXxQYpOrUl9ZzLqlSxqMDgCLcB/s1600/IMG_2991.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="320" src="https://4.bp.blogspot.com/-azX11ejDEM8/V5USHnPYtVI/AAAAAAAAIZI/wBFhkTQgaEkXXxQYpOrUl9ZzLqlSxqMDgCLcB/s320/IMG_2991.JPG" width="214" /></a></div>

Lastly, I sat by the pool and started to reflect over all the things I had learned over these last five days and this quote from <b>Dave Burgess</b> jumped out at me. If you have never heard of him, you need to pick up his book <i>Teach Like a PIRATE</i>. It is inspiring!!<br />

Happy July! I hope you are enjoying some warm weather and time off. <br />
<br />
In the United States July 4th is fireworks and picnics, families and flags. That's what I wanted to share with you today....fostering patriotism in little ones through a love of history.<br />
<br />
How can we get our little ones excited about ideas that are so abstract?<br />
<br />
We can start with a flag....flags being a symbol of the country we live in. Flags where colors are identifiable and easy for kids to see and remember. Flags that kids like to create and wave. Flags that tell stories.<br />
<table align="center" cellpadding="0" cellspacing="0" class="tr-caption-container" style="margin-left: auto; margin-right: auto; text-align: center;"><tbody>
<tr><td style="text-align: center;"><a href="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/-5qjW0e4oEWg/U7WpLXxA5NI/AAAAAAAAE54/2YdAgc_uiyw/s1600/Slide5.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: auto; margin-right: auto;"><img border="0" height="308" src="https://2.bp.blogspot.com/-5qjW0e4oEWg/U7WpLXxA5NI/AAAAAAAAE54/2YdAgc_uiyw/s1600/Slide5.JPG" width="400" /></a></td></tr>
<tr><td class="tr-caption" style="text-align: center;">This flag was drawn by the wonderful Melonheadz Illustrating.</td></tr>
</tbody></table>
<br />
The first American flag was officially adopted on June 14, 1777. Of course there were flags before and there were even several different versions after. But on June 14th, Continental Congress adopted the following: <i>Resolved: that
the flag of the United States be thirteen stripes, alternate red and
white; that the union be thirteen stars, white in a blue field,
representing a new constellation.</i><br />
<i> </i><br />
Without specifics not all flags looked exactly the same. Some stars had 5 points, some had six or eight. The stars were also on the blue field in a variety of arrangements.<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/-oTSi5qy8EWQ/U7Sz2uiRe6I/AAAAAAAAE2Q/WvO1zpNtP7A/s1600/us-flags.gif" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="640" src="https://2.bp.blogspot.com/-oTSi5qy8EWQ/U7Sz2uiRe6I/AAAAAAAAE2Q/WvO1zpNtP7A/s1600/us-flags.gif" width="348" /></a></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<span style="font-size: large;"> Probably the most recognizable is the circle version, known as the Betsy Ross flag.</span></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/-POzD76KRB5E/U7WmafTnufI/AAAAAAAAE5E/7MGHI0XEjww/s1600/1280px-US_flag_13_stars_%E2%80%93_Betsy_Ross.svg.png" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="210" src="https://1.bp.blogspot.com/-POzD76KRB5E/U7WmafTnufI/AAAAAAAAE5E/7MGHI0XEjww/s1600/1280px-US_flag_13_stars_%E2%80%93_Betsy_Ross.svg.png" width="400" /></a></div>
<br />
Did Betsy Ross sew the 1st American flag? We do not know that for certain....but we do know that she and George Washington were friends (their family pews were next to each other in Christ's Church in Philadelphia). We do know she was an excellent seamstress and we know that she did design and sew flags (among other things). And we know that her grandchildren told of her recounting the family story of George Washington coming and asking her to make him a flag from a sketch that he had drawn. Whether it be all true or part fiction, children remember things better when there is a story. <br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/-h7Co3oGRdXw/U7WnzfJuIsI/AAAAAAAAE5Q/36RvHx3gMX4/s1600/Slide2.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="308" src="https://3.bp.blogspot.com/-h7Co3oGRdXw/U7WnzfJuIsI/AAAAAAAAE5Q/36RvHx3gMX4/s1600/Slide2.JPG" width="400" /></a></div>
Don't forget Francis Hopkinson of New Jersey, we know he designed the 1777 flag (he sent a bill to congress for his work).<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/-ZSFae-OCzbE/U7WpgHXzK9I/AAAAAAAAE58/38HZPGSa-8o/s1600/1235px-Hopkinson_Flag.svg.png" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="210" src="https://1.bp.blogspot.com/-ZSFae-OCzbE/U7WpgHXzK9I/AAAAAAAAE58/38HZPGSa-8o/s1600/1235px-Hopkinson_Flag.svg.png" width="400" /></a></div>
Flags were mostly used for navy ships and battlefields. Having a national flag was not a common practice at the time. Many of our early flags were just loosely based on the resolution of 1777. <br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
</div>
There were several different ways to place the stars and until 1912 it was up to the flag-maker to decide exactly what that would be. <br />
<br />
Originally it was thought that there would be a new star and a new stripe for every new state. The flag that flew over Fort McHenry when our national anthem was written had 15 stars and 15 stripes.<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/--MPY2ckKslc/U7WUOa5UejI/AAAAAAAAE2g/l-LtL5KhgAY/s1600/1024px-StarSpangledBannerFlag.svg.png" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="285" src="https://3.bp.blogspot.com/--MPY2ckKslc/U7WUOa5UejI/AAAAAAAAE2g/l-LtL5KhgAY/s1600/1024px-StarSpangledBannerFlag.svg.png" width="400" /></a></div>
Later it was realized that to continue to add stripes would create a flag whose proportions were all off. It would be too cumbersome, so the flag code was changed in 1818. We went back to 13 stripes for the 13 original colonies, and only stars were to be added for each new state. The new flags would become official on July 4th of the year after the state was added.<br />
<br />
Most kids love a parade. They love real things, so I like to get a small flag for each student, put on some great patriotic marching music and have a parade. You can do this for the 4th of July, in school or around the block. You can also celebrate Flag Day, Memorial Day, Veteran's Day, President's Day, or here in Nevada our statehood day, October 31st.<br />
<br />
It is fun to have your students make their own flags too (counting practice, following directions, being observant, beginning to make the abstract concepts of patriotism and country more concrete).<br />
<br />
If you use 9x12 white paper you need to cut these parts:<br />
*red stripes 1/2 or 3/4 inches wide<br />
*blue canton 6x5 inches<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/-mTYDsI6qcbY/U7WpJ7p7SrI/AAAAAAAAE5s/T9Gvx1tVOyg/s1600/Slide3.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="308" src="https://3.bp.blogspot.com/-mTYDsI6qcbY/U7WpJ7p7SrI/AAAAAAAAE5s/T9Gvx1tVOyg/s1600/Slide3.JPG" width="400" /></a></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
</div>
If you use 12x18 white paper you need to cut these parts:<br />
*red stripes 1 inch wide<br />
*blue canton 8x6 1/2 inches<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/-E3cuF8bAeY8/U7WaRmcjSwI/AAAAAAAAE3g/yMQWcneuq9c/s1600/DSC_0555.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="267" src="https://2.bp.blogspot.com/-E3cuF8bAeY8/U7WaRmcjSwI/AAAAAAAAE3g/yMQWcneuq9c/s1600/DSC_0555.JPG" width="400" /></a></div>
STEPS:<br />
1. cut the red stripes and blue field.<br />
2. Glue 7 red stripes all the way across the flag (spacing won't be exact, but it will be close).<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/-5zaTrmLlOU4/U7WpKRWzGvI/AAAAAAAAE5w/gCdWToW1kRA/s1600/Slide4.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="308" src="https://4.bp.blogspot.com/-5zaTrmLlOU4/U7WpKRWzGvI/AAAAAAAAE5w/gCdWToW1kRA/s1600/Slide4.JPG" width="400" /></a></div>
<br />
3. glue the blue field in the upper left corner (gluing on top tof the stripes is so much easier than figuring out what needs to be short and exactly where they need to be).<br />
4. Stars....you will need 13. There are several ways to do that. You could use stickers, but there are also die cuts, painting, stamping, or just a white crayon or chalk. <br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/-UqJ0q8gn0hM/U7WYVwTqlYI/AAAAAAAAE3U/ayte_yKil9w/s1600/DSC_0548.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="267" src="https://4.bp.blogspot.com/-UqJ0q8gn0hM/U7WYVwTqlYI/AAAAAAAAE3U/ayte_yKil9w/s1600/DSC_0548.JPG" width="400" /></a></div>
<br />
If you don't want to make a flag, but you want something that flies in the wind, try this windsock.<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/-z81-x53xUu0/U7WcBqRd4BI/AAAAAAAAE3o/alO6YHSAO4Q/s1600/DSC_0576.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="400" src="https://2.bp.blogspot.com/-z81-x53xUu0/U7WcBqRd4BI/AAAAAAAAE3o/alO6YHSAO4Q/s1600/DSC_0576.JPG" width="267" /></a></div>
<br />
You will need:<br />
*one piece of construction paper or cardstock. (I like the 12x18 size)<br />
*party streamers<br />
*decorations (stars, paints, flags, markers, and crayons) <br />
*a spinner/swivel (from the fishing isle at Wal~Mart)<br />
*clear fishing line (or any string)<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/-BAbLpxI5BSU/U7WeZ5wlLlI/AAAAAAAAE34/J9I2P_G5MHY/s1600/DSC_0560.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="267" src="https://1.bp.blogspot.com/-BAbLpxI5BSU/U7WeZ5wlLlI/AAAAAAAAE34/J9I2P_G5MHY/s1600/DSC_0560.JPG" width="400" /></a></div>
<br />
Making a windsock is so easy! Start by decorating your piece of paper.<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/-Nzm6gznzKDc/U7WfG-4qRoI/AAAAAAAAE4A/pp8NqY8AkjI/s1600/DSC_0562.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="267" src="https://4.bp.blogspot.com/-Nzm6gznzKDc/U7WfG-4qRoI/AAAAAAAAE4A/pp8NqY8AkjI/s1600/DSC_0562.JPG" width="400" /></a></div>
<br />
Then, tape or glue streamers to the bottom inside of your paper. I also added a strip of tape to the top for reinforcement. <br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/-9IdaY1ycirc/U7Wf1JATwZI/AAAAAAAAE4I/lX7RyqO4udk/s1600/DSC_0564.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="267" src="https://1.bp.blogspot.com/-9IdaY1ycirc/U7Wf1JATwZI/AAAAAAAAE4I/lX7RyqO4udk/s1600/DSC_0564.JPG" width="400" /></a></div>
<br />
Next, staple your paper into a cylinder.<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/-Ha2f4bts6Xg/U7Wgy0-C6QI/AAAAAAAAE4Q/ciLr4mcVlJQ/s1600/DSC_0565.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="267" src="https://3.bp.blogspot.com/-Ha2f4bts6Xg/U7Wgy0-C6QI/AAAAAAAAE4Q/ciLr4mcVlJQ/s1600/DSC_0565.JPG" width="400" /></a></div>
<br />
Finally, punch 3 or 4 holes into the top and string the fishing line through the holes. Tie the spinner to the center of the strings<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/-BsiRlaZCXJ0/U7Whdj6ttkI/AAAAAAAAE4Y/3tC_LkPC8Dc/s1600/DSC_0568.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="267" src="https://4.bp.blogspot.com/-BsiRlaZCXJ0/U7Whdj6ttkI/AAAAAAAAE4Y/3tC_LkPC8Dc/s1600/DSC_0568.JPG" width="400" /></a></div>
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/-MQMSFs5oTjw/U7WhshIpLvI/AAAAAAAAE4g/HjMhsCvbUlg/s1600/DSC_0570.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="400" src="https://3.bp.blogspot.com/-MQMSFs5oTjw/U7WhshIpLvI/AAAAAAAAE4g/HjMhsCvbUlg/s1600/DSC_0570.JPG" width="267" /></a></div>
TaDa!!! You have a windsock that spins in the breeze.<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/-wPK60Rdhi8U/U7Wi5dPeRuI/AAAAAAAAE4s/zwX3HyoezzQ/s1600/DSC_0571.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="640" src="https://3.bp.blogspot.com/-wPK60Rdhi8U/U7Wi5dPeRuI/AAAAAAAAE4s/zwX3HyoezzQ/s1600/DSC_0571.JPG" width="428" /></a></div>
Don't forget to add some music and books to your celebration/learning. This one, from the fabulous <a href="http://rainbowswithinreach.blogspot.com/2014/06/patriotic-childrens-art-collaboration.html" target="_blank">Debbie Clement</a> is so good. You can read more about it<a href="http://rainbowswithinreach.blogspot.com/2014/06/patriotic-childrens-art-collaboration.html" target="_blank"> here</a> and you can buy it for your own<a href="http://www.teacherspayteachers.com/Product/Red-White-and-Blue-Patriotic-Song-for-Digital-Download-301627" target="_blank"> here</a>.<br />

<div style="text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
Another favorite of mine is this book by Peter Spier</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">

<br />
I love the inside covers...they are filled with flags! The words are the words to our National Anthem<br />
<br />
<div style="text-align: center;">
We are celebrating with our own little flag parade! </div>

Try this little game with your shark teeth.....a little missing addend fun.<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://www.teacherspayteachers.com/Product/Missing-Addend-Shark-Attack-1385932" target="_blank"><img alt="http://www.teacherspayteachers.com/Product/Missing-Addend-Shark-Attack-1385932" border="0" height="640" src="https://1.bp.blogspot.com/-S42rCJmKnKU/U-hsrVWcyCI/AAAAAAAAGYo/bl5-myBF2Us/s1600/Slide1.PNG" title="KinderKapers Shark Attack" width="480" /></a></div>
Grab some teeth, count them<br />
Player one hides some (while everyone else hides their eyes). Try under a shell or in a treasure box.<br />
Now player two (or three and four) open their eyes and <i>LOOK</i>....how many do you see?<br />
Figure out how many are hiding. Check. Write your equation. <br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">

<span style="font-size: large;">Mother's Day is just around the corner and if you are looking for a <span style="font-size: x-large;"><span style="color: yellow;">BRIGHT IDEA</span></span>......I have one for you. </span> </div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/-ECYwcmIZS4s/VTIzyF7-k3I/AAAAAAAAH2s/eiulSDo3mFg/s1600/bright%2Bideas%2B2.001.png" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="200" src="https://3.bp.blogspot.com/-ECYwcmIZS4s/VTIzyF7-k3I/AAAAAAAAH2s/eiulSDo3mFg/s1600/bright%2Bideas%2B2.001.png" width="200" /></a></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<span style="font-size: large;">In my Kindergarten classroom there are always so many things I want to have my students make, but these bath salts have been a favorite year after year.</span></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/-nLWUxlw21L4/U2WJmDq9_FI/AAAAAAAAEX0/Vix799RmmRw/s1600/DSC_0003.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="428" src="https://2.bp.blogspot.com/-nLWUxlw21L4/U2WJmDq9_FI/AAAAAAAAEX0/Vix799RmmRw/s1600/DSC_0003.JPG" width="640" /></a></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<span style="font-size: large;">They are easy and fool proof. </span></div>
<div style="text-align: left;">
You just need:</div>
<i><b> Epsom salts </b></i>(any variety of epsom salts will work)<br />
<i><b> coarse sea salts </b></i><br />
<i><b> baking soda</b></i><br />
<i><b> scent</b></i><br />
<i><b> color</b></i><br />
<i><b> a container </b></i><br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/-jmKO4sSQUlM/U2WKDndO6_I/AAAAAAAAEX8/6oaWQ1hLW8s/s1600/DSC_0980.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="267" src="https://2.bp.blogspot.com/-jmKO4sSQUlM/U2WKDndO6_I/AAAAAAAAEX8/6oaWQ1hLW8s/s400/DSC_0980.JPG" width="400" /></a></div>
<br />
The measurements don't have to be exact (which is great when kinder kids do their own measuring). There are many, many recipes on the internet, but mine goes like this:<br />
<i><b> 3 parts Epson salts</b></i><br />
<i><b> 1 part sea salt</b></i><br />
<i><b> 1/3 part baking soda</b></i><br />
<i><b> few drops of scent </b>(essential oils)</i><br />
<i><b> few drops of color</b></i><br />
*mix together until scent and color are evenly distributed.<br />
<br />
<br />
In real life, for each student it looks like this:<br />
measure into a quart baggie:<br />
<i><b> 1 cup Epson salt</b></i><br />
<i><b> 1/3 cup sea salt</b></i><br />
<i><b> 2 Tablespoons of baking soda</b></i><br />
<i><b> few drops of scent </b><span style="font-size: x-small;">(I use the liquid candle oils, essential oils are expensive)</span></i><br />
<i><b> few drops of color</b></i><br />
<br />
*mix together, then pour into glass jar (just because it is so pretty)<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/-hGlJ0C6xGqk/U2WLg9-UXUI/AAAAAAAAEYI/Lm9ZOXTMGt0/s1600/DSC_0984.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="400" src="https://2.bp.blogspot.com/-hGlJ0C6xGqk/U2WLg9-UXUI/AAAAAAAAEYI/Lm9ZOXTMGt0/s1600/DSC_0984.JPG" width="328" /></a></div>
<br />
<div style="text-align: center;">
Add a card or a note, and you are set. Send home any extra in the baggie (or layer the extras like a sand painting, and give to someone special at your school).</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/-5-vzLWGy1uE/U2WLxI84joI/AAAAAAAAEYQ/woPsmhqBtxI/s1600/DSC_0008.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="640" src="https://1.bp.blogspot.com/-5-vzLWGy1uE/U2WLxI84joI/AAAAAAAAEYQ/woPsmhqBtxI/s1600/DSC_0008.JPG" width="428" /></a></div>
<br />
<div style="text-align: center;">
<span style="font-size: large;">If you want to try something a little different try this:</span></div>
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/-jZvNf84BeI4/U2WMBasLX9I/AAAAAAAAEYY/b9UacAsh9gY/s1600/DSC_0005.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="400" src="https://3.bp.blogspot.com/-jZvNf84BeI4/U2WMBasLX9I/AAAAAAAAEYY/b9UacAsh9gY/s1600/DSC_0005.JPG" width="267" /></a></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">

That's me. I can't believe how nervous (and excited) I am to be blogging again.<br />
<br />
I love linking up with <a href="http://doodlebugsteaching.blogspot.com/2016/01/five-for-friday-linky-party-january-15th.html" target="_blank">Doodle Bugs Teaching</a> and <a href="http://doodlebugsteaching.blogspot.com/2016/01/five-for-friday-linky-party-january-15th.html" target="_blank">Five For Friday</a>...so this is a great place to start (even if it is Monday)!<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">

<br />
Is it snowing where you are? After two no snow winters we have snow that doesn't seem to want to stop. We have been taking advantage of it and having some great fun and learning too.<br />

<br />
On Tuesday we had cold frost coming out of the air forming perfect crystals. We went out right away with little magnifying glasses and black paper to see if we could catch some....and WE DID!!<br />

<a href="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/-s6SA6y-uM3s/Vp3pE1OtQFI/AAAAAAAAIR0/97IXQlef8N4/s1600/Slide1.PNG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="640" src="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/-s6SA6y-uM3s/Vp3pE1OtQFI/AAAAAAAAIR0/97IXQlef8N4/s640/Slide1.PNG" width="480" /></a></div>
<br />
My best advice is to take advantage quickly. If you wait, the flakes may be gone, or as the day warms up, turn into rain. The colder the better (they don't melt as fast on the paper or your clothes) and you don't have to be out for a long time. Be sure to write, draw, and talk about what you discovered.<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/-u5lTYKsqgs4/Vp3CUjQ9cfI/AAAAAAAAIRI/FMeEw5ezbOQ/s1600/Divider%2B2.png" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="200" src="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/-u5lTYKsqgs4/Vp3CUjQ9cfI/AAAAAAAAIRI/FMeEw5ezbOQ/s200/Divider%2B2.png" width="141" /></a></div>
<br />
If you have lots and lots of fresh snow try this recipe for snow cream:<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/-gSKymRlBlJI/Vp3pcZQZs6I/AAAAAAAAISA/ZLFYB4TqMdc/s1600/Slide2.PNG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="640" src="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/-gSKymRlBlJI/Vp3pcZQZs6I/AAAAAAAAISA/ZLFYB4TqMdc/s640/Slide2.PNG" width="480" /></a></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
</div>
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
</div>
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/-xWgZguJNN1k/Vp3pdWN1tyI/AAAAAAAAISE/XLp-y6tT4QQ/s1600/Slide3.PNG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="640" src="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/-xWgZguJNN1k/Vp3pdWN1tyI/AAAAAAAAISE/XLp-y6tT4QQ/s640/Slide3.PNG" width="480" /></a></div>
<br />
You can keep the ingredients on hand if you use canned milk (for that surprise snowstorm)<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/-bOKhnmjWNfg/Vp3CUUrnfiI/AAAAAAAAIRE/SP0je8KhKGo/s1600/Divider%2B3.png" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="200" src="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/-bOKhnmjWNfg/Vp3CUUrnfiI/AAAAAAAAIRE/SP0je8KhKGo/s200/Divider%2B3.png" width="141" /></a></div>
<br />
Of course it is not a good snowstorm if you can't make a snowman. But it was, so we did!<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/-iVBZp2wqbFM/Vp3p5lDzMnI/AAAAAAAAISM/FVcK7t6jLI0/s1600/Slide4.PNG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="640" src="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/-iVBZp2wqbFM/Vp3p5lDzMnI/AAAAAAAAISM/FVcK7t6jLI0/s640/Slide4.PNG" width="480" /></a></div>
<br />
After making snowmen I got sooo much good writing!!! My students were motivated!<br />
<br />
We also reenacted <span style="font-size: large;"><b><i>The Snowy Day</i></b></span> (good chance to talk about why we don't through snowballs). No pictures, but lots of giggles when I knocked snow onto my own head.<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/-u2Kv8qgWEbc/Vp3CU1N7D2I/AAAAAAAAIRQ/PzT54RSKMtg/s1600/Divider%2B4.png" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="200" src="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/-u2Kv8qgWEbc/Vp3CU1N7D2I/AAAAAAAAIRQ/PzT54RSKMtg/s200/Divider%2B4.png" width="141" /></a></div>
<br />
No snow where you live?? I have a solution for that too. Try this recipe for snow. My kids went crazy over it.<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/-X-kd6C3EqMo/Vp3qGP-Mz-I/AAAAAAAAISU/1Yu0wgtGZug/s1600/Slide5.PNG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="640" src="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/-X-kd6C3EqMo/Vp3qGP-Mz-I/AAAAAAAAISU/1Yu0wgtGZug/s640/Slide5.PNG" width="480" /></a></div>
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/-iLoicrDSvsE/Vp3CVG9q7QI/AAAAAAAAIRU/XOfkcMphFJo/s1600/Divider%2B5.png" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="200" src="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/-iLoicrDSvsE/Vp3CVG9q7QI/AAAAAAAAIRU/XOfkcMphFJo/s200/Divider%2B5.png" width="141" /></a></div>
<br />
You could also have a little snowball fight during math. Try this game for practicing missing addends. <br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://www.teacherspayteachers.com/Product/Missing-Addend-Snowball-Fight-1037139" target="_blank"><img alt="https://www.teacherspayteachers.com/Product/Missing-Addend-Snowball-Fight-1037139" border="0" height="640" src="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/-2MEPZFSf5Xo/Vp3qTvFFm6I/AAAAAAAAISc/ra0TqLzo3KQ/s640/Slide6.PNG" width="480" /><span id="goog_1099367191"></span></a><span id="goog_1099367192"></span></div>
You can pick up a copy of my recording sheets, instructions, and a Math Talk workmat in my TpT store for FREE! Just click right <a href="https://www.teacherspayteachers.com/Product/Missing-Addend-Snowball-Fight-1037139" target="_blank">here </a>or on the picture.<br />
<br />
Don't be afraid to bundle up and take your students outside in the snow....or if that is not possible, bring some snow into your students and have some FuN (and learning too).<br />

<a href="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/-fLxewS2qrkk/VB0OR0LugEI/AAAAAAAAHKo/BPJqLezCwyg/s1600/september1.png" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="640" src="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/-fLxewS2qrkk/VB0OR0LugEI/AAAAAAAAHKo/BPJqLezCwyg/s1600/september1.png" width="480" /></a></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
</div>
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/-71pWfb5PfSk/VB0gIadGQZI/AAAAAAAAHLY/1f3aQmD2yoU/s1600/september3a.png" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="400" src="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/-71pWfb5PfSk/VB0gIadGQZI/AAAAAAAAHLY/1f3aQmD2yoU/s1600/september3a.png" width="300" /></a></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
</div>
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/-ARIThz0rJpM/VB0f_b_sWxI/AAAAAAAAHLQ/Iej0NSVMIg4/s1600/september4a.png" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="640" src="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/-ARIThz0rJpM/VB0f_b_sWxI/AAAAAAAAHLQ/Iej0NSVMIg4/s1600/september4a.png" width="480" /></a> </div>
<br />
<span style="font-size: x-large;">Ask this question for creating a science experiment: </span><br />
<div style="text-align: center;">
<span style="font-size: x-large;">Does the largest pumpkin have the most seeds?</span></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/-0L9O_d9rA-E/VB0j5v3h0RI/AAAAAAAAHLg/kOv4QgXG0Eg/s1600/september5.png" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="640" src="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/-0L9O_d9rA-E/VB0j5v3h0RI/AAAAAAAAHLg/kOv4QgXG0Eg/s1600/september5.png" width="480" /></a></div>
<br />
I do not give my students spoons. I like that they have to touch the inside and truly get to "experience" the pumpkin. All the seeds go on a large baking sheet where I have taped a piece of their paper as a label to identify the group. Pulp goes on the paper, then it all goes in the trash. I don't worry about bits of extra pulp. BUT.....trust me, <span style="font-size: x-large;"><i>let the seeds dry overnight before trying to count them.</i></span> They won't be totally dry, but they will be significantly less slimy and easier to count.<br />
<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/-n_6DhhRlVac/VB0l7g0g7kI/AAAAAAAAHLo/SDkBHvBiWTM/s1600/september6.png" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="640" src="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/-n_6DhhRlVac/VB0l7g0g7kI/AAAAAAAAHLo/SDkBHvBiWTM/s1600/september6.png" width="480" /></a></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
We always take time the first day to talk about what we saw, smelled, felt, and heard (we save tasting for another day) as we were observing our pumpkins. We record our describing words on an anchor chart and use that to write about pumpkins too.</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/-TSnzCv2l6hE/VB0tIcmeybI/AAAAAAAAHL0/tJwDHxyQB40/s1600/september10.png" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="640" src="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/-TSnzCv2l6hE/VB0tIcmeybI/AAAAAAAAHL0/tJwDHxyQB40/s1600/september10.png" width="480" /></a></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/-CK4c_lmkUOM/VB0tVg9_VZI/AAAAAAAAHL8/JNEnrUhgUWc/s1600/september7.png" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="640" src="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/-CK4c_lmkUOM/VB0tVg9_VZI/AAAAAAAAHL8/JNEnrUhgUWc/s1600/september7.png" width="480" /></a></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
Every time I have done this activity it has gone smoother with parent volunteers, one for each group. Even second and third graders have a hard time keeping track counting.</div>

It is already October (my busiest month in school as I try to squeeze in so much). I want to link up with Farley and <a href="http://ohboy3rdgrade.blogspot.com/2015/10/currently-october-2015.html?utm_source=feedburner&utm_medium=email&utm_campaign=Feed%3A+blogspot%2FnnnTs+%28Oh%27+Boy+4th+Grade%29" target="_blank">Oh Boy, It's Fourth Grade</a> to reflect on the month past and the month to come.....so here goes:<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://ohboy3rdgrade.blogspot.com/2015/10/currently-october-2015.html?utm_source=feedburner&utm_medium=email&utm_campaign=Feed%3A+blogspot%2FnnnTs+%28Oh%27+Boy+4th+Grade%29" target="_blank"><img alt="http://ohboy3rdgrade.blogspot.com/2015/10/currently-october-2015.html?utm_source=feedburner&utm_medium=email&utm_campaign=Feed%3A+blogspot%2FnnnTs+%28Oh%27+Boy+4th+Grade%29" border="0" height="640" src="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/-63CqjKsRogA/VhAFs31lY2I/AAAAAAAAIMg/LmPn2zZyU8c/s640/currently%2Boct.png" width="494" /></a></div>
<br />
<br />
I tend to let the TV be on in the background for white noise when I am home alone. I need to make more intentional choices, because I would really like some beautiful music today. I also need to figure out how to play music on my phone.....wait!....okay....DONE! Downloaded and playing. I am not as technology challenged as I thought.<br />
<br />
My mom lives all the way across the country from me. She came out for my nephew's wedding in September, but she had broken her hip right before she came. We convinced her to stay here and let us take care of her for a few weeks of her rehab. It was WONDERFUL!!<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/-nTzHvlfGsow/VhAFevOsQlI/AAAAAAAAIMY/c2aJix0D9k4/s1600/mom.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="267" src="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/-nTzHvlfGsow/VhAFevOsQlI/AAAAAAAAIMY/c2aJix0D9k4/s400/mom.jpg" width="400" /></a></div>
<br />
My mom is Patricia Thomas, a children's book author, so she came to my school and did author visits for almost every class in my school. I think I wore her out. She needed to go to my sister's house to recoop from me.<br />
<br />
I also blog at<a href="http://www.prekandksharing.blogspot.com/2015/10/the-zombies-are-coming-and-spiders-and.html" target="_blank"> PreK and K Sharing</a> and today is my day to post! YIKES!! Between school and my mom I let the month of September slip away. But I am on it!! You can hop over there to check it out (all about Zombie Eyes and Bat Wings....there is a <a href="http://www.prekandksharing.blogspot.com/2015/10/the-zombies-are-coming-and-spiders-and.html" target="_blank">freebie</a>).<br />
<br />
I have THAT class this year. Seriously. I am not kidding. It is taking all my energy, and skill, plus all the brains I can borrow to make things run smoothly in my room. My golden tickets (which I stole from The Teeny Tiny Teacher) were just not cutting it. Whole Brain Teaching wasn't quite working either....last week I changed my whole setting arrangement (stinkers are together and workers are together). That helped for about one day. But, we are making progress. I actually think it will help my workers the most. They deserve my best. I can't let them suffer because I have so many that do not know how to work or behave. My little stinkers will come around and see the light...it is just taking time. <br />
<br />
My mom was telling me last night that she and my sister were decorating my sister's house. I was jealous and realized I hadn't even thought about getting my Halloween decorations and autumn things out. Autumn is my favorite season and putting my things out will be Boo-ti-ful!<br />
<br />
The colors and being outside just make me happy! Have a wonderful October!<br />

<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://www.everykidinapark.gov/" target="_blank"><img alt="https://www.everykidinapark.gov/" border="0" height="138" src="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/-JqrKzPg0hxE/VfZkVmR3JVI/AAAAAAAAIK8/afOiIZcjLR8/s320/how-it-works-pass.png" width="320" /></a></div>
<br />
Yes, you heard me right FREE!<br />
<br />
If you are an educator of fourth grade students (teacher, religious leader, homeschool leader, scout or other after school leader) you can facilitate your students getting a pass. Check it out<a href="https://www.everykidinapark.gov/get-your-pass/educator" target="_blank"> here</a>.<br />
<br />
The pass will cover entrance fees for your student and three adults or any one he brings with him in a car at any National Park.<br />
<br />
WHAT???<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://www.everykidinapark.gov/" target="_blank"><img alt="https://www.everykidinapark.gov/" border="0" height="320" src="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/-7juA5F91fls/VfZkqtmXSDI/AAAAAAAAILE/qnEQnXTd_K8/s320/logo.png" width="320" /></a></div>
<br />
Is this for real? Yes....Yes it is. <a href="https://www.everykidinapark.gov/" target="_blank">Go to the Every Kid in a Park</a> Website <a href="https://www.everykidinapark.gov/" target="_blank">here</a> and follow the simple steps. <a href="https://www.everykidinapark.gov/get-your-pass/educator" target="_blank">Teachers</a> can download the activities for their class and then print off the passes when students complete the activity. <a href="https://www.everykidinapark.gov/" target="_blank">Students</a> can go to the website themselves and download an activity.<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://www.everykidinapark.gov/get-your-pass/educator" target="_blank"><img alt="https://www.everykidinapark.gov/get-your-pass/educator" border="0" height="640" src="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/-t5-oysTJdbM/VfZky7ZbykI/AAAAAAAAILM/1oT4Alc85nk/s640/how-it-works-print.png" width="523" /></a></div>
I had started counting down the years until I am old enough to buy a Golden Age passport, now I just need to find a fourth grader! <br />

I can't remember when I have started off the year this tired. Either my age is catching up with me or I had so many ideas I wanted to implement<span id="goog_2008090213"></span><span id="goog_2008090214"></span> after the amazing conferences I attended this summer that I just couldn't do it all. I tried...but I couldn't do it ALL.<br />

<br />
So I am linking up up today with<a href="http://doodlebugsteaching.blogspot.com/2015/09/five-for-friday-linky-party-september.html" target="_blank"> Doodle Bug Teaching</a> to show a few little snapshots of what I did do and how my first week back went GREAT (despite not doing EVERYTHING).<br />

First up...Back to School Night, which technically was last week. I was not finished with my room, but it was done enough that my parents knew I was working on it. I had these cute treats for my kiddos and ice cold water for my parents (note to self...there might be more than one parent with their student, so bring more water). Thanks to<a href="http://www.schroedershenanigansin2nd.com/" target="_blank"> Ashley Schroeder</a> from Schroeder's Shenanigans in 2nd for the cute<a href="https://www.teacherspayteachers.com/Product/FREEBIE-Open-House-water-bottle-gift-tag-for-parents-2025567" target="_blank"> tags</a> and idea!<br />

<br />
On the first day we tried to open with major excitement by doing some minute to win it and get to know you games. We timed to see if we could get an Oreo cookie into our mouth in just a minute (sorry no pictures) and we played <a href="https://www.teacherspayteachers.com/Store/Terri-Izatt/Search:stand%20up" target="_blank">Stand Up for Friendship</a> (a freebie in my store). Just ask general questions, like who has a brother? And then they <span style="font-size: x-large;">Stand Up</span>. Give your students a chance to see who has interests similar to theirs and maybe talk about it a bit.<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">

<br />
Pete the Cat helped us take a tour of the school as we looked for his shoes. Each of our specials, our lunch lady, principal, secretaries, and nurse decorated a shoe. We collected them as we went along. Later we will use them again when we write about our school community.<br />

<br />
We ended the day making<a href="https://www.teacherspayteachers.com/Store/Terri-Izatt" target="_blank"><span style="font-size: large;"> friendship salad</span></a>. I like to use different ingredients to describe the behaviors I want my students to exibit. Then when it came to our banana they all yelled NO!! Why no banana? It was a rotten one of course! This gave us a chance to talk about those rotten banana behaviors we don't want in our class.<br />

<br />
We revisited this discussion later in the week, when we made our own little recipe books and chiefs. The books came from my unit...but the <a href="https://www.teacherspayteachers.com/Product/Cooking-Up-a-Great-Year-Craft-and-Writing-Templates-251433" target="_blank">chiefs</a> belong to <a href="https://www.teacherspayteachers.com/Product/Cooking-Up-a-Great-Year-Craft-and-Writing-Templates-251433" target="_blank">Miss Kindergarten</a>. Hers are so so cute!! Don't you just love them??<br />

<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/-kVJqOSzSgT4/Vb5YeGBmdTI/AAAAAAAAIH4/of4cNlMZ04o/s1600/2gether%2Bslides.002.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="140" src="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/-kVJqOSzSgT4/Vb5YeGBmdTI/AAAAAAAAIH4/of4cNlMZ04o/s400/2gether%2Bslides.002.jpg" width="400" /></a></div>
<br />
I like making bulletin boards easy....cute...impressive to parents...useful to students. Let's look at those four things.<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/-kPNsF7dRwYs/Vb3zvPVL8xI/AAAAAAAAIF4/NQ8_zU2TL-w/s1600/Slide1.PNG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="640" src="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/-kPNsF7dRwYs/Vb3zvPVL8xI/AAAAAAAAIF4/NQ8_zU2TL-w/s640/Slide1.PNG" width="486" /></a></div>
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/-OWlZwAr0S9w/Vb30ASgqonI/AAAAAAAAIGA/-uuB4RcC6eA/s1600/Slide2.PNG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="640" src="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/-OWlZwAr0S9w/Vb30ASgqonI/AAAAAAAAIGA/-uuB4RcC6eA/s640/Slide2.PNG" width="486" /></a></div>
<br />
I like to pick a paper or fabric that will get me through the whole year. Blue and black are good choices, but when I go back I may try brown wrapping paper....Look for that in my reveal. Get at least one extra set of hands to help hold the paper while you get it in place to be stapled. Use push pins to hold the fabric in place while you are getting it straight. Staple, when everything looks good. Minimal words at the beginning of the year. I like students to build up content for the boards.<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/-vLwYIe544Wg/Vb30kmuh9YI/AAAAAAAAIGQ/ANuBc-thBrk/s1600/Slide3.PNG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="640" src="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/-vLwYIe544Wg/Vb30kmuh9YI/AAAAAAAAIGQ/ANuBc-thBrk/s640/Slide3.PNG" width="486" /></a></div>
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/-SMD3CGQeMy4/Vb30gVdY7ZI/AAAAAAAAIGI/PsGExXzxkfc/s1600/Slide4.PNG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="640" src="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/-SMD3CGQeMy4/Vb30gVdY7ZI/AAAAAAAAIGI/PsGExXzxkfc/s640/Slide4.PNG" width="486" /></a></div>
You want your bulletin boards to tell people something about you....do you like modern clean lines, or comfy cozy spaces? Are you all business or a little more right-brained? Keep your colors so they don't clash with each other. Keep them all within the same color pallet, or have them complementing each other. You could do one main color and then others that make things "pop". Your color and pattern choices can tell your students a lot about you. Things don't have to be perfect, but you do want to make a good first impression. A minimal room can tell your students....we are going to work together in here. This is your room too!<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/-FWXqkqidFWw/Vb31VnxTsLI/AAAAAAAAIGo/geeQE79UYjs/s1600/Slide5.PNG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="640" src="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/-FWXqkqidFWw/Vb31VnxTsLI/AAAAAAAAIGo/geeQE79UYjs/s640/Slide5.PNG" width="486" /></a></div>
I hate to say it...but your bulletin boards are what people see first. You want to make a good impression. Check out these from Katie King at Queen of the First Grade Jungle (now exploring 2nd grade)<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://queenofthefirstgradejungle.blogspot.com/2015/07/bash-basket-7-schoolgirl-style.html" target="_blank"><img alt="http://queenofthefirstgradejungle.blogspot.com/2015/07/bash-basket-7-schoolgirl-style.html" border="0" height="640" src="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/-HIFULqSZT0w/Vb31RsZRdmI/AAAAAAAAIGg/T2eVUHmMogo/s640/Slide6.PNG" width="486" /></a></div>
<br />
The one below was a special door contest. Notice how big the whale is compared to the ladybugs the students made. 3D can be awesome if your fire marshals will allow (we get away with more during certain celebrations, like this book fair). <br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/-bVA_sZxHru0/Vb31P6W6YEI/AAAAAAAAIGY/guWwfSl1vaA/s1600/Slide11.PNG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="640" src="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/-bVA_sZxHru0/Vb31P6W6YEI/AAAAAAAAIGY/guWwfSl1vaA/s640/Slide11.PNG" width="486" /></a></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/-m7mBUEgTg5s/Vb37frgaYAI/AAAAAAAAIG4/-K-YHSgNtxg/s1600/Slide7.PNG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="640" src="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/-m7mBUEgTg5s/Vb37frgaYAI/AAAAAAAAIG4/-K-YHSgNtxg/s640/Slide7.PNG" width="486" /></a></div>
<br />
If you have a word wall use it!! Everyday...keep it growing. If you have anchor charts, build them, use them, build another (storing or giving the old one to the students to keep for reference).<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/-M3IC5Blm284/Vb37oePV50I/AAAAAAAAIHQ/xRxexEIdV80/s1600/Slide8.PNG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="400" src="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/-M3IC5Blm284/Vb37oePV50I/AAAAAAAAIHQ/xRxexEIdV80/s400/Slide8.PNG" width="303" /></a></div>
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/-Enm3oj_1A6U/Vb37qIqH7HI/AAAAAAAAIHY/MZlPJNt3R4w/s1600/Slide9.PNG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="400" src="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/-Enm3oj_1A6U/Vb37qIqH7HI/AAAAAAAAIHY/MZlPJNt3R4w/s400/Slide9.PNG" width="303" /></a></div>
You can use your walls and doors as bulletin boards too. I like to attach things with hot glue or that super sticky foamy adhesive tape. That stuff is strong (things won't fall down), but it leaves a mess. Hot glue has become my adhesive of choice.<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">

<img align="middle" src="http://i1102.photobucket.com/albums/g447/eschaff/Kinder%20Kapers/sgn1.png" />Anonymousnoreply@blogger.com4tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-6165681765789382998.post-17648255291787289182015-07-18T07:00:00.000-07:002015-07-18T07:00:02.447-07:00HELP!! I am drowning in clutter!I am a hoarder....There I said it. I am not really proud of that fact, but I have a <span style="color: yellow;"><span style="font-size: x-large;"><b><i>Bright Idea</i></b></span></span> on how to fix it.<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/-WJIa6FU3Sgo/U8nq5hojeCI/AAAAAAAAFoI/CvhBk8kKCLY/s1600/bright+ideas+2.001.png" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="320" src="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/-WJIa6FU3Sgo/U8nq5hojeCI/AAAAAAAAFoI/CvhBk8kKCLY/s1600/bright+ideas+2.001.png" width="320" /></a></div>
<br />
I searched high and low for ideas and a plan of action that would work for me.<br />
<br />
I read blogs, checked pinterest, and ended up back where I started 30 years ago when I first realized that my kindergarten stuff wasn't fitting very well in file folders. I kept my samples and stuff in paper boxes (have your custodian save them for you), then labeled them by months.<br />
<br />
In the mean time....my stuff has expanded and the boxes are gone (three schools, and two states ago).<br />
<br />
True confessions....Do you have a mess like me? Maybe not this bad, but teachers are notorious. We save things because we might need them. You never know....projects, grade level changes, and just the money invested.<br />
<br />
That is why I came up with this Plan of Action!! Join me on this journey (it is not over yet).<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/-yaHG1gvWOJE/U8neoNEUD8I/AAAAAAAAFmw/aZeC_sxu7IY/s1600/Slide2.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="640" src="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/-yaHG1gvWOJE/U8neoNEUD8I/AAAAAAAAFmw/aZeC_sxu7IY/s1600/Slide2.JPG" width="482" /></a></div>
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/-Q_Tgrd0yJwY/U8neol2cs6I/AAAAAAAAFm0/vaQIqDhX5EE/s1600/Slide3.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="640" src="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/-Q_Tgrd0yJwY/U8neol2cs6I/AAAAAAAAFm0/vaQIqDhX5EE/s1600/Slide3.JPG" width="482" /></a></div>
<br />
It is hard. I am not going to lie, this is not easy on me emotionally. I have a lot invested. I am afraid of changing grade levels. I am afraid of not having something I need (or want). But speaking those fears out loud, make them seem not so scary. I am already getting psyched for this journey!! I can do this!<br />
<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/-ZeSnYzpMOC0/U8nfKf122SI/AAAAAAAAFnA/uiV4r6Si7h0/s1600/Slide4.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="640" src="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/-ZeSnYzpMOC0/U8nfKf122SI/AAAAAAAAFnA/uiV4r6Si7h0/s1600/Slide4.JPG" width="482" /></a></div>
<br />
Don't take too long on this step. Don't think too much, there is more sorting to come.<br />
<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/-rI5Ux_UXTGw/U8ngR8zGMcI/AAAAAAAAFnM/BsGnK_ZLVyg/s1600/Slide5.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="640" src="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/-rI5Ux_UXTGw/U8ngR8zGMcI/AAAAAAAAFnM/BsGnK_ZLVyg/s1600/Slide5.JPG" width="482" /></a></div>
But what about the things you don't use every day?? Set them aside for now....and when you are done with yes and no, group those seasonal things into categories that seem to make sense to you.<br />
<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/-zlW0CHlRDM0/U8nnbwOUczI/AAAAAAAAFnk/OsOagKAfqMI/s1600/Slide7.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="640" src="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/-zlW0CHlRDM0/U8nnbwOUczI/AAAAAAAAFnk/OsOagKAfqMI/s1600/Slide7.JPG" width="482" /></a></div>
<br />
My thought is one tub for each month (right now my stuff is scattered in
lots of different tubs and all mixed up), but I may need to add one for
holidays that have lots of stuff (like Christmas, Halloween, Easter,
and Thanksgiving). I may also designate a tub for math and reading, so I
can store things that do not fit a month or theme. My tubs must fit along my garage wall, and I will bring them to school as I need them. I do have a craft closet at home and my supplies will have to fit in there. My space available will determine my limits.<br />
<br />
<div style="text-align: center;">

<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/-2wu_LR6dFPs/VYnrIN2cPII/AAAAAAAAH_c/z2IKD1f-75o/s1600/summer.png" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="224" src="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/-2wu_LR6dFPs/VYnrIN2cPII/AAAAAAAAH_c/z2IKD1f-75o/s320/summer.png" width="320" /></a></div>
Happy for several reasons...First, there is just so much I like to do in the summer that I don't have for during the school year. Things like hiking, camping, and playing outside, and reorganizing my stuff.<br />
<br />
I also like to use my summers to recharge and refresh my spirit. One way I do that is to join in on book study. This way I learn new things and get new perspectives on my teaching. This year was kind-of rough on me so I am particularly excited to read <a href="http://thecornerstoneforteachers.com/books/unshakeable" target="_blank"><i>Unshakable</i></a> by Angela Watson. <br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://thecornerstoneforteachers.com/books/unshakeable" target="_blank"><img alt="http://thecornerstoneforteachers.com/books/unshakeable" border="0" height="640" src="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/-mrKk7B_FWow/VYoljedArxI/AAAAAAAAH_s/DZHgKiJNQjI/s640/Unshakeable%2Bbook%2Band%2BeBook.jpg" width="480" /></a></div>
<br />
I got to meet Angela at a brunch with a few other teachers last year. She is one of the most kind and incredibly insightful people I know. We have chatted back and forth on email a bit and I find her to be the real deal....authentic. She gave me some wonderful words of wisdom and helped me to think about all the things I love about teaching. I am excited to read her latest book and join in on the discussions.<br />
<br />
Along with her book, Angela is hosting an online book study group. You can read more about it on her website, <a href="http://thecornerstoneforteachers.com/summer-events" target="_blank">The Cornerstone</a>. All the information you need to join in, is right there. She and Frankie Robinson will be sharing 20 ways to enjoy teaching in 20 days. I am really looking forward to delving into this book and participating in the discussions. Angela says, <br />
<br />
<div style="text-align: center;">
<span style="font-size: large;"><b><i>Don't wait for teaching to be fun again: Plan on it! </i></b></span></div>

My room is packed for summer cleaning, but I know I will be going through my shelves carefully later this summer. It was a long hard decision....but I am staying in second next year. I am looking forward to some of my sweet kinder kids (I have already seen many of their names on my list) and to the view out my window, where I want to spend more of my teaching time.<br />

June means my mom is here!!!!! She lives in Pennsylvania and every summer she comes to Utah and Nevada to visit my sister and me. This year my daughter planned a party for her 81st and 1/2 birthday. All of my children and grandchildren and many (most) of my nieces and nephews and their children were able to come. It was such a suprise and such a great visit to have everyone in the same place at the same time!!<br />

I am having fun this year introducing my mom to blogging friends. Yesterday we went to lunch with the fabulous Nikki from Melonheadz Illustrating. I just love her to pieces and it was so fun to introduce her to mom. Tuesday we are going to the Cheesecake Factory to hopefully meet up with more Utah blogging friends.<br />

<br />
While my mom is here I have been taking advantage of her writing abilities (she is an author and teacher of writing, plus an editor for Marywood University), and getting her to edit a couple of projects I have been working on. <br />
<br />
I have been working on this non-fiction unit. I think my definitions are too wordy, so it is not yet finished. <br />

Happy June 14th.....Flag Day! I hope you are enjoying some warm weather and time off. This is a favorite time of year for me.<br />
<br />
In the United States July 4th is fireworks and picnics, families and flags. June 14th is Flag Day...that's what I wanted to share with you today....fostering patriotism in little ones through a love of history.<br />
<br />
How can we get our little ones excited about ideas that are so abstract?<br />
<br />
<tr><td style="text-align: center;"><a href="http://melonheadzillustrating.blogspot.com/" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: auto; margin-right: auto;" target="_blank"><img border="0" height="308" src="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/-5qjW0e4oEWg/U7WpLXxA5NI/AAAAAAAAE54/2YdAgc_uiyw/s1600/Slide5.JPG" width="400" /></a></td></tr>
<tr><td class="tr-caption" style="text-align: center;"><a href="http://melonheadzillustrating.blogspot.com/" target="_blank">This flag was drawn by the wonderful Melonheadz Illustrating.</a></td></tr>
</tbody></table>
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/-oTSi5qy8EWQ/U7Sz2uiRe6I/AAAAAAAAE2Q/WvO1zpNtP7A/s1600/us-flags.gif" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="640" src="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/-oTSi5qy8EWQ/U7Sz2uiRe6I/AAAAAAAAE2Q/WvO1zpNtP7A/s1600/us-flags.gif" width="348" /></a></div>
<br />
Probably the most recognizable is the circle version, known as the Betsy Ross flag.<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/-POzD76KRB5E/U7WmafTnufI/AAAAAAAAE5E/7MGHI0XEjww/s1600/1280px-US_flag_13_stars_%E2%80%93_Betsy_Ross.svg.png" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="210" src="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/-POzD76KRB5E/U7WmafTnufI/AAAAAAAAE5E/7MGHI0XEjww/s1600/1280px-US_flag_13_stars_%E2%80%93_Betsy_Ross.svg.png" width="400" /></a></div>
<br />
<br />
<table align="center" cellpadding="0" cellspacing="0" class="tr-caption-container" style="margin-left: auto; margin-right: auto; text-align: center;"><tbody>
<tr><td style="text-align: center;"><a href="http://melonheadzillustrating.blogspot.com/" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: auto; margin-right: auto;" target="_blank"><img border="0" height="308" src="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/-h7Co3oGRdXw/U7WnzfJuIsI/AAAAAAAAE5Q/36RvHx3gMX4/s1600/Slide2.JPG" width="400" /></a></td></tr>
<tr><td class="tr-caption" style="text-align: center;"><a href="http://melonheadzillustrating.blogspot.com/" target="_blank">Clip Art is by Melonheadz Illustrating</a></td></tr>
</tbody></table>
Don't forget Francis Hopkinson of New Jersey, we know he designed the 1777 flag (he sent a bill to congress for his work).<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/-ZSFae-OCzbE/U7WpgHXzK9I/AAAAAAAAE58/38HZPGSa-8o/s1600/1235px-Hopkinson_Flag.svg.png" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="210" src="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/-ZSFae-OCzbE/U7WpgHXzK9I/AAAAAAAAE58/38HZPGSa-8o/s1600/1235px-Hopkinson_Flag.svg.png" width="400" /></a></div>
Flags were mostly used for navy ships and battlefields. Having a national flag was not a common practice at the time. Many of our early flags were just loosely based on the resolution of 1777. <br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
</div>
There were several different ways to place the stars and until 1912 it was up to the flag-maker to decide exactly what that would be. <br />
<br />
Originally it was thought that there would be a new star and a new stripe for every new state. The flag that flew over Fort McHenry when our national anthem was written had 15 stars and 15 stripes.<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/--MPY2ckKslc/U7WUOa5UejI/AAAAAAAAE2g/l-LtL5KhgAY/s1600/1024px-StarSpangledBannerFlag.svg.png" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="285" src="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/--MPY2ckKslc/U7WUOa5UejI/AAAAAAAAE2g/l-LtL5KhgAY/s1600/1024px-StarSpangledBannerFlag.svg.png" width="400" /></a></div>
Later it was realized that to continue to add stripes would create a flag whose proportions were all off. It would be too cumbersome, so the flag code was changed in 1818. We went back to 13 stripes for the 13 original colonies, and stars were to be added for each new state. The new flags would become official on July 4th of the year after the state was added.<br />
<br />
Most kids love a parade. They love real things, so I like to get a small flag for each student, put on some great patriotic marching music and have a parade. You can do this for the 4th of July in school or around the block. You can also celebrate Flag Day, Memorial Day, Veteran's Day, or here in Nevada our statehood day, October 31st.<br />
<br />
It is fun to have your students make their own flags too (counting practice, following directions, being observant, beginning to make the abstract concepts of patriotism and country more concrete).<br />
<br />
If you use 9x12 white paper you need to cut these parts:<br />
*red stripes 1/2 or 3/4 inches wide<br />
*blue canton 6x5 inches<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/-mTYDsI6qcbY/U7WpJ7p7SrI/AAAAAAAAE5s/T9Gvx1tVOyg/s1600/Slide3.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="308" src="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/-mTYDsI6qcbY/U7WpJ7p7SrI/AAAAAAAAE5s/T9Gvx1tVOyg/s1600/Slide3.JPG" width="400" /></a></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
</div>
If you use 12x18 white paper you need to cut these parts:<br />
*red stripes 1 inch wide<br />
*blue canton 8x6 1/2 inches<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/-E3cuF8bAeY8/U7WaRmcjSwI/AAAAAAAAE3g/yMQWcneuq9c/s1600/DSC_0555.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="267" src="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/-E3cuF8bAeY8/U7WaRmcjSwI/AAAAAAAAE3g/yMQWcneuq9c/s1600/DSC_0555.JPG" width="400" /></a></div>
STEPS:<br />
1. cut the red stripes and blue field.<br />
2. Glue 7 red stripes all the way across the flag (spacing won't be exact, but it will be close).<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/-5zaTrmLlOU4/U7WpKRWzGvI/AAAAAAAAE5w/gCdWToW1kRA/s1600/Slide4.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="308" src="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/-5zaTrmLlOU4/U7WpKRWzGvI/AAAAAAAAE5w/gCdWToW1kRA/s1600/Slide4.JPG" width="400" /></a></div>
<br />
3. glue the blue field in the upper left corner (gluing on top tof the stripes is so much easier than figuring out what needs to be short and exactly where they need to be).<br />
4. Stars....you will need 13. There are several ways to do that. You could use stickers, but there are also die cuts, painting, stamping, or just a white crayon or chalk. <br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/-UqJ0q8gn0hM/U7WYVwTqlYI/AAAAAAAAE3U/ayte_yKil9w/s1600/DSC_0548.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="267" src="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/-UqJ0q8gn0hM/U7WYVwTqlYI/AAAAAAAAE3U/ayte_yKil9w/s1600/DSC_0548.JPG" width="400" /></a></div>
<br />
If you don't want to make a flag, but you want something that flies in the wind, try this windsock.<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/-z81-x53xUu0/U7WcBqRd4BI/AAAAAAAAE3o/alO6YHSAO4Q/s1600/DSC_0576.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="400" src="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/-z81-x53xUu0/U7WcBqRd4BI/AAAAAAAAE3o/alO6YHSAO4Q/s1600/DSC_0576.JPG" width="267" /></a></div>
<br />
You will need:<br />
*one piece of construction paper or cardstock. (I like the 12x18 size)<br />
*party streamers<br />
*decorations (stars, paints, flags, markers, and crayons) <br />
*a spinner/swivel (from the fishing isle at Wal~Mart)<br />
*clear fishing line (or any string)<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/-BAbLpxI5BSU/U7WeZ5wlLlI/AAAAAAAAE34/J9I2P_G5MHY/s1600/DSC_0560.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="267" src="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/-BAbLpxI5BSU/U7WeZ5wlLlI/AAAAAAAAE34/J9I2P_G5MHY/s1600/DSC_0560.JPG" width="400" /></a></div>
<br />
Making a windsock is so easy! Start by decorating your piece of paper.<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/-Nzm6gznzKDc/U7WfG-4qRoI/AAAAAAAAE4A/pp8NqY8AkjI/s1600/DSC_0562.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="267" src="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/-Nzm6gznzKDc/U7WfG-4qRoI/AAAAAAAAE4A/pp8NqY8AkjI/s1600/DSC_0562.JPG" width="400" /></a></div>
<br />
Then, tape or glue streamers to the bottom inside of your paper. I also added a strip of tape to the top for reinforcement. <br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/-9IdaY1ycirc/U7Wf1JATwZI/AAAAAAAAE4I/lX7RyqO4udk/s1600/DSC_0564.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="267" src="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/-9IdaY1ycirc/U7Wf1JATwZI/AAAAAAAAE4I/lX7RyqO4udk/s1600/DSC_0564.JPG" width="400" /></a></div>
<br />
Next, staple your paper into a cylinder.<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/-Ha2f4bts6Xg/U7Wgy0-C6QI/AAAAAAAAE4Q/ciLr4mcVlJQ/s1600/DSC_0565.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="267" src="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/-Ha2f4bts6Xg/U7Wgy0-C6QI/AAAAAAAAE4Q/ciLr4mcVlJQ/s1600/DSC_0565.JPG" width="400" /></a></div>
<br />
Finally, punch 3 or 4 holes into the top and string the fishing line through the holes. Tie the spinner to the center of the strings<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/-BsiRlaZCXJ0/U7Whdj6ttkI/AAAAAAAAE4Y/3tC_LkPC8Dc/s1600/DSC_0568.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="267" src="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/-BsiRlaZCXJ0/U7Whdj6ttkI/AAAAAAAAE4Y/3tC_LkPC8Dc/s1600/DSC_0568.JPG" width="400" /></a></div>
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/-MQMSFs5oTjw/U7WhshIpLvI/AAAAAAAAE4g/HjMhsCvbUlg/s1600/DSC_0570.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="400" src="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/-MQMSFs5oTjw/U7WhshIpLvI/AAAAAAAAE4g/HjMhsCvbUlg/s1600/DSC_0570.JPG" width="267" /></a></div>
TaDa!!! You have a windsock that spins in the breeze.<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/-wPK60Rdhi8U/U7Wi5dPeRuI/AAAAAAAAE4s/zwX3HyoezzQ/s1600/DSC_0571.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="640" src="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/-wPK60Rdhi8U/U7Wi5dPeRuI/AAAAAAAAE4s/zwX3HyoezzQ/s1600/DSC_0571.JPG" width="428" /></a></div>
Don't forget to add some music and books to your celebration/learning. This one, from our own <a href="http://rainbowswithinreach.blogspot.com/2014/06/patriotic-childrens-art-collaboration.html" target="_blank">Debbie Clement</a> is so good.
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">

<br />
Another favorite of mine is this book by Peter Spier<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/-FXyk6HEMi80/U7WkfOR4hdI/AAAAAAAAE44/PUTLqiSfOn0/s1600/star+spangled+banner+by+spier.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="400" src="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/-FXyk6HEMi80/U7WkfOR4hdI/AAAAAAAAE44/PUTLqiSfOn0/s1600/star+spangled+banner+by+spier.JPG" width="285" /></a></div>
<br />
I love the inside covers...they are filled with flags! The words are the words to our National Anthem with pictures to illustrate them. LOVE his attention to detail!<br />
<br />
Hope you will be having a ton of fun this summer. Don't forget to throw in a little red white and blue action and share with your children and your students a bit of the history of our wonderful country.<br />

The school year is almost gone! Where did the time go?<br />
<br />
This time of year we get so caught up in what <b><span style="font-size: large;"><i>needs to be done</i></span></b>, and what we <b><span style="font-size: large;"><i>want to get done</i></span></b> .....that I, for one, run out of time. Last year I saw this <a href="http://littlekinderwarriors.blogspot.com/2014/05/kindergarten-favorites-pictures.html" target="_blank">post</a> by <a href="http://littlekinderwarriors.blogspot.com/2014/05/kindergarten-favorites-pictures.html" target="_blank">Katie Mense</a> of <a href="http://littlekinderwarriors.blogspot.com/2014/05/kindergarten-favorites-pictures.html" target="_blank">Little Warriors</a> and just had to give these keepsake pictures a try.<br />
<br />

They turned out so wonderful I wanted to share this idea with you. It is easy and you can pull it together fairly quickly. I loved giving these to my students on the last day.<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/-DywBmoXW128/VWDD1TK672I/AAAAAAAAH4w/Z-kQm8FOEew/s1600/Slide12.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="480" src="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/-DywBmoXW128/VWDD1TK672I/AAAAAAAAH4w/Z-kQm8FOEew/s640/Slide12.JPG" width="640" /></a></div>
<br />
I create these keepsake pictures in powerpoint and print them off at our local Walgreens or Walmart. They don't take a lot of time and if they are easy enough for me to do, you can do them too. Just follow these simple steps.<br />
<br />
<b><span style="font-size: x-large;">First</span></b>....find an empty wall (outside is good) and take a digital picture of each student. Make sure that the child is way over to one side (I like to use the left).<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/-Zvc_7mkElYw/VWDjmvxt0vI/AAAAAAAAH5Y/oiIOd9hPGmw/s1600/Slide1.PNG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="640" src="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/-Zvc_7mkElYw/VWDjmvxt0vI/AAAAAAAAH5Y/oiIOd9hPGmw/s640/Slide1.PNG" width="494" /></a></div>
<br />
<span style="font-size: x-large;"><b>Next</b></span>...drop (insert) that picture into a powerpoint presentation. One picture on each slide. I love creating in powerpoint.<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/-5wYivndG-Wg/VWDjzltLqEI/AAAAAAAAH5g/aGjPBOX2UZ4/s1600/Slide2.PNG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="640" src="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/-5wYivndG-Wg/VWDjzltLqEI/AAAAAAAAH5g/aGjPBOX2UZ4/s640/Slide2.PNG" width="494" /></a></div>
<br />
For this you need to select: design, slide size, standard (4:3), landscape. I also change my settings to 11 inches by 8.5 (standard paper).<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/-C_SXwQNBmSo/VWDj8NlO6HI/AAAAAAAAH5o/mO-imCIhJaY/s1600/Slide3.PNG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="640" src="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/-C_SXwQNBmSo/VWDj8NlO6HI/AAAAAAAAH5o/mO-imCIhJaY/s640/Slide3.PNG" width="494" /></a></div>
<br />
<span style="font-size: x-large;"><b>Then</b></span>, I add my textbox. I get all my fonts just the way I want them, and before I start typing in too much information I duplicate the slide. That way I can easily change the picture, change the text, and make one slide for each student.<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/-YMwqvwbDtKc/VWDkHQuJ-FI/AAAAAAAAH5w/Y3rf9Kyx2No/s1600/Slide4.PNG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="640" src="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/-YMwqvwbDtKc/VWDkHQuJ-FI/AAAAAAAAH5w/Y3rf9Kyx2No/s640/Slide4.PNG" width="494" /></a></div>
<br />
If I right click on the picture I can change it, or I can go to format and the menu there also has a button for change the picture.<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/-f-tOetQvB5k/VWDkTfjrHXI/AAAAAAAAH54/LekMzIXhZ7U/s1600/Slide5.PNG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="640" src="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/-f-tOetQvB5k/VWDkTfjrHXI/AAAAAAAAH54/LekMzIXhZ7U/s640/Slide5.PNG" width="494" /></a></div>
<br />
Easy Peasy Lemon Squeezy. Once you get all the slides with their pictures, then go back and change the name, the color, add information (did I say, don't forget to survey your students and keep those little slips of paper?)<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/-dh3Daf-BQH8/VWDJTvDp4yI/AAAAAAAAH5I/xlnLbHfSbG8/s1600/Slide3.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="308" src="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/-dh3Daf-BQH8/VWDJTvDp4yI/AAAAAAAAH5I/xlnLbHfSbG8/s400/Slide3.JPG" width="400" /></a></div>
<br />
Last...when all the slides are done save it as either a jpeg or png. I save both my original powerpoint (in case I need to go back to edit) and then a jpeg file.<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/-G85lJGfiXrs/VWDkcPRSngI/AAAAAAAAH6A/Q5swlG7vwjU/s1600/Slide6.PNG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="640" src="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/-G85lJGfiXrs/VWDkcPRSngI/AAAAAAAAH6A/Q5swlG7vwjU/s640/Slide6.PNG" width="494" /></a></div>
<br />
Now you are ready to take them to where ever you have your pictures printed!<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/-KvNai25bxTA/VWDEY3NtMfI/AAAAAAAAH44/K8ZdcnAj5Nk/s1600/Slide20.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="300" src="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/-KvNai25bxTA/VWDEY3NtMfI/AAAAAAAAH44/K8ZdcnAj5Nk/s400/Slide20.JPG" width="400" /></a></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/-8pt-vdnxXeE/VWDoPk8I8AI/AAAAAAAAH6M/dSm317UO7b0/s1600/Slide14.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="300" src="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/-8pt-vdnxXeE/VWDoPk8I8AI/AAAAAAAAH6M/dSm317UO7b0/s400/Slide14.JPG" width="400" /></a></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/-jBMx-WlcTfs/VWDok2N3m4I/AAAAAAAAH6U/cg2mnf6q_1o/s1600/Slide16.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="300" src="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/-jBMx-WlcTfs/VWDok2N3m4I/AAAAAAAAH6U/cg2mnf6q_1o/s400/Slide16.JPG" width="400" /></a></div>

Where did this school year go? I haven't linked up with <a href="http://ohboy3rdgrade.blogspot.com/" target="_blank">Farley</a> very much this year...it's been that kind of year, but I am excited to link up today.<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/-2rhOpwYjQFk/VUZPf0Dt4xI/AAAAAAAAH3M/HrG3KEPruIc/s1600/may15%2B%5BAutosaved%5D.png" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/-2rhOpwYjQFk/VUZPf0Dt4xI/AAAAAAAAH3M/HrG3KEPruIc/s1600/may15%2B%5BAutosaved%5D.png" height="640" width="494" /></a></div>
<br />
This year has been a struggle for me. Second grade seems different than when I taught it just six years ago....or maybe I am different. Trying to find my feet and my voice in second has been a challenge and I think I am excited to continue my growth in second next year. My students though....FABULOUS!! They are so fun, so excited to learn, eager to try new things, forgiving when I make mistakes.<br />
<br />
This summer I am looking forward to going back to Las Vegas and the <a href="http://www.sde.com/iteachk2015/" target="_blank">conferences</a> there. It was so motivational last year. I cannot wait!<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://www.sde.com/iteachk2015/" target="_blank"><img alt="http://www.sde.com/iteachk2015/" border="0" src="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/--ro6ae_Ph-4/VUZYZgewHzI/AAAAAAAAH3c/moj3S3KkeKQ/s1600/2014-07-06%2B19.22.24.jpg" height="400" width="267" /></a></div>
<br />
I hope I get to go home to PA and spend some time with my mom, and I hope I get to run Grandma Camp for as many of my grandkids I can get to come spend a week with me. I've done that once before and it was fun! Now that most of my grandkids have moved far away, it will be trickier getting them here...but I am hoping.<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/-eX9w_ACi5Fc/VUZZ9YpMP-I/AAAAAAAAH3o/ZROW5Llz-N4/s1600/lake.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/-eX9w_ACi5Fc/VUZZ9YpMP-I/AAAAAAAAH3o/ZROW5Llz-N4/s1600/lake.jpg" height="267" width="400" /></a></div>
<br />
My dream is to have wood floors in my upstairs...my husband has been promising, but something always gets in the way. Maybe this is the summer. My other dream is to go to Hawaii...but I know that is not happening.<br />

<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/-ECYwcmIZS4s/VTIzyF7-k3I/AAAAAAAAH2s/eiulSDo3mFg/s1600/bright%2Bideas%2B2.001.png" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/-ECYwcmIZS4s/VTIzyF7-k3I/AAAAAAAAH2s/eiulSDo3mFg/s1600/bright%2Bideas%2B2.001.png" height="200" width="200" /></a></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
In my Kindergarten classroom I always want to do so many things, but these bath salts have been a favorite year after year.</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/-nLWUxlw21L4/U2WJmDq9_FI/AAAAAAAAEX0/Vix799RmmRw/s1600/DSC_0003.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/-nLWUxlw21L4/U2WJmDq9_FI/AAAAAAAAEX0/Vix799RmmRw/s1600/DSC_0003.JPG" height="428" width="640" /></a></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
They are easy and fool proof. </div>
<div style="text-align: left;">
You just need:</div>
<i><b>Epsom salts</b></i><br />
<i><b>coarse sea salts</b></i><br />
<i><b>baking soda</b></i><br />
<i><b>scent</b></i><br />
<i><b>color</b></i><br />
<i><b>a container </b></i><br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/-jmKO4sSQUlM/U2WKDndO6_I/AAAAAAAAEX8/6oaWQ1hLW8s/s1600/DSC_0980.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/-jmKO4sSQUlM/U2WKDndO6_I/AAAAAAAAEX8/6oaWQ1hLW8s/s1600/DSC_0980.JPG" height="428" width="640" /></a></div>
<br />
The measurements don't have to be exact (which is great when kinder kids do their own measuring). There are many, many recipes on the internet, but mine goes like this:<br />
<i><b>3 parts Epson salts</b></i><br />
<i><b>1 part sea salt</b></i><br />
<i><b>1/3 part baking soda</b></i><br />
<i><b>few drops of scent </b>(essential oils)</i><br />
<i><b>few drops of color</b></i><br />
*mix together until scent and color are evenly distributed.<br />
<br />
In real life. for each student it looks like this:<br />
measure into a quart baggie:<br />
<i><b>1 cup Epson salt</b></i><br />
<i><b>1/3 cup sea salt</b></i><br />
<i><b>2 Tablespoons of baking soda</b></i><br />
<i><b>few drops of scent </b>(I use the liquid candle oils, essential oils are expensive)</i><br />
<i><b>few drops of color</b></i><br />
<br />
*mix together, then pour into glass jar (just because it is so pretty)<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/-hGlJ0C6xGqk/U2WLg9-UXUI/AAAAAAAAEYI/Lm9ZOXTMGt0/s1600/DSC_0984.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/-hGlJ0C6xGqk/U2WLg9-UXUI/AAAAAAAAEYI/Lm9ZOXTMGt0/s1600/DSC_0984.JPG" height="400" width="328" /></a></div>
<br />
<div style="text-align: center;">
Add a card or a note, and you are set. Send home any extras in the baggie (or layer the extras like a sand painting, and give to someone special at your school).</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/-5-vzLWGy1uE/U2WLxI84joI/AAAAAAAAEYQ/woPsmhqBtxI/s1600/DSC_0008.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/-5-vzLWGy1uE/U2WLxI84joI/AAAAAAAAEYQ/woPsmhqBtxI/s1600/DSC_0008.JPG" height="640" width="428" /></a></div>
<br />
If you want to try something a little different try this:<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/-jZvNf84BeI4/U2WMBasLX9I/AAAAAAAAEYY/b9UacAsh9gY/s1600/DSC_0005.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/-jZvNf84BeI4/U2WMBasLX9I/AAAAAAAAEYY/b9UacAsh9gY/s1600/DSC_0005.JPG" height="400" width="267" /></a></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
I gave those to some special friends one year.<br />

First up is Spring Break. I had a wonderful time visiting with six of my grandkids and learning how to make these sugar eggs. I wrote about my first attempt <a href="http://merrykinderkapers.blogspot.com/2015/03/a-little-bit-of-easter-fun.html" target="_blank">here</a>, and we had so much fun I did it again with another set of grandkids.<br />

<br />
Easter was a quiet day. I am LDS, so I spent much of the weekend enjoying <a href="https://www.lds.org/general-conference/?lang=eng" target="_blank">conference</a>.<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">

The rest of the weekend was dying eggs, having fun listening to the grandkids tell me about the Easter Bunny, and having a wonderful meal my son cooked for us (didn't get any good pictures of the smoked ham...but it was yummy).<br />

<br />
Then spring Break was over too soon and it was back to school. Parent Teacher conferences were this week. They always make me nervous. I like to have my students show off some of what they have been doing, so I created this self-reflection page last fall and I gave it to them this week. I really want to get them thinking about their learning.<br />

Finally, as I was working on lesson plans this week, I realized that all week long we have palindromes. Yes our digital dates all week are the same forwards and backwards.<br />

<span style="font-size: x-large;">HUGE edit alert!</span> Next week doesn't work....because it is no longer 2014. How did I not figure that out sooner. Next Month...MAY is the fun one! Here is the revised picture. Have you ever had one of those days???<br />

<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/-es_HOraYZ38/VRjmSF-W_aI/AAAAAAAAHvk/2K9pHtnCq2Y/s1600/DSC_0271.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/-es_HOraYZ38/VRjmSF-W_aI/AAAAAAAAHvk/2K9pHtnCq2Y/s1600/DSC_0271.JPG" height="427" width="640" /></a></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
I found them on Pinterest and the pin led me to <a href="http://www.fabdiy.com/diy-paper-plates-bunny-bag/" target="_blank">FAB DIY:</a></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://www.fabdiy.com/diy-paper-plates-bunny-bag/" target="_blank"><img alt="http://www.fabdiy.com/diy-paper-plates-bunny-bag/" border="0" src="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/-WcyX8zJxeGw/VRjnT7V1G-I/AAAAAAAAHvs/A77w3jBXyc8/s1600/DIY-Paper-Plates-Bunny-Bag.jpg" height="640" width="579" /></a></div>
They were super easy to make and every time those cotton balls and googly eyes went on they took on a personality all their own.<br />
<br />
They really were easy! We filled them with grass and of course...Peeps!<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/-q4CwjtLqRS8/VRjnuzwqYUI/AAAAAAAAHv0/PONGrGBzNOo/s1600/bunny%2Bbaskets.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/-q4CwjtLqRS8/VRjnuzwqYUI/AAAAAAAAHv0/PONGrGBzNOo/s1600/bunny%2Bbaskets.jpg" height="400" width="400" /></a></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<span style="font-size: x-large;">Then I had tons of fun making these!! </span> </div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/-292RaMT5Yr0/VRjxkspBEwI/AAAAAAAAHwE/taig30wSQJg/s1600/sugar%2Beggs2.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/-292RaMT5Yr0/VRjxkspBEwI/AAAAAAAAHwE/taig30wSQJg/s1600/sugar%2Beggs2.jpg" height="400" width="400" /></a></div>
True confessions....I did not make these in my Kinder classroom, I did not make these in my Second Grade classroom, I made these with my grandchildren ages 3, 7, and 8. Plus one for the baby. My good friend makes these in 4th grade and asked that I <i>NOT</i> make them with my students, but she gave me her recipe and let me borrow her molds if I promised to let them stay as a 4th grade project. They were super easy....much easier than I expected. They can be messy if you are trying them with a classroom of younger students. Be prepared for sugar spills. <br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/-LbMaIwLeHyY/VRjzKcFtxDI/AAAAAAAAHwQ/6aDywB9Zi60/s1600/sugar%2Beggs%2B4.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/-LbMaIwLeHyY/VRjzKcFtxDI/AAAAAAAAHwQ/6aDywB9Zi60/s1600/sugar%2Beggs%2B4.jpg" height="400" width="400" /></a></div>
I thought I would need more water or glue or spray in the molds, or something more than 2 cups of sugar and 2 teaspoons of water. But no....it all worked perfectly. Add the water and the food coloring (go darker, because the color will fade as it dries), mix together with the tips of your fingers (not your whole hand like my one grandson). Press into the mold, coming to the top and leaving a large dent in the center. Let dry 24 hours, wiggle free.<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/-Nte2KLd3hK8/VRj0g2wx4oI/AAAAAAAAHwc/lc-N2LhbNrM/s1600/sugar%2Beggs%2B5.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/-Nte2KLd3hK8/VRj0g2wx4oI/AAAAAAAAHwc/lc-N2LhbNrM/s1600/sugar%2Beggs%2B5.jpg" height="400" width="400" /></a></div>
Carve a hole in the end or the side (I did this over the sink for easy clean-up). Add creatures and grass (green coconut might be better, but we didn't have any). "Glue" together with frosting. Use decorating tips for fancy frosting designs and other small add-ons for decorations. Ta-Da!! <br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/-cvVCMA03s3A/VRj3Z7nXueI/AAAAAAAAHws/-_hka5EiH00/s1600/sugar%2Beggs.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/-cvVCMA03s3A/VRj3Z7nXueI/AAAAAAAAHws/-_hka5EiH00/s1600/sugar%2Beggs.jpg" height="400" width="400" /></a></div>
<br />

<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/-OwLxt1XuklM/VQOHMGoxbOI/AAAAAAAAHsE/SBMFALy3DWA/s1600/book%2Bcover%2BDendrites.jpe" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/-OwLxt1XuklM/VQOHMGoxbOI/AAAAAAAAHsE/SBMFALy3DWA/s1600/book%2Bcover%2BDendrites.jpe" height="320" width="248" /></a>
When it came I sat down and started looking through it right away. When I got to chapter three I just got so excited. I kept saying, Yup, that's me! and Ohhh, I need to remember that. Lots of yellow highlighting and notes in the margins so I would remember. </div>
<br />
Then Science Fair came,<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/-P9B5Y2QE57M/VQOM_889xaI/AAAAAAAAHsU/X_9MFznzTAA/s1600/DSC_0128.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/-P9B5Y2QE57M/VQOM_889xaI/AAAAAAAAHsU/X_9MFznzTAA/s1600/DSC_0128.JPG" height="267" width="400" /></a></div>
and this is the first chance I've had to sit down and put my thoughts on paper. I want to tell you about Science Fair, but that will have to wait for another day (that is however, a short little field trip for the kids to go see all the projects) <br />
<br />
My first thought as I read this chapter was how lucky we are to have an outdoor education area at our school. The quote from the book that says that just a change of scenery can do a world of good for activating the brain and engaging the child in learning, really struck home for me. We have this wonderful area that doesn't get used enough. I love going out there from time to time, but I could use it so much more.<br />

<br />
Let me tell you a story about what happened today. We have been participating in <a href="http://www.projectgroundhog.net/" target="_blank">The Groundhog Project</a>, where we were trying to decide if the groundhog was a good weather forecaster. We have been keeping track of our data and posting it online with schools from across United States and Canada. Today was the last day and we were supposed to vote if our Groundhog was correct. Our groundhog was, we had an early spring. So I asked my students how they knew and suggested we go out back to check if we could see signs of spring. We talked about what we might look for, and then got ready to go. One student suggested we take whiteboards and paper to take notes (we often use our whiteboards as "desks" when we are sitting on the floor). Brilliant!! Of course, what a great idea! Everybody wanted a whiteboard and some paper, so out we went. We looked around, observed closely, took notes, shared our findings with our partners, I showed some things I observed (differences in leaf buds), and we gathered on our platform, where we have these table/benches, to share altogether. Even as we walked back to the classroom we were finding more signs.<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/-Yh_aOGRhV2A/VQORZRQUHXI/AAAAAAAAHs8/ngAy89-DKoI/s1600/field%2Btrip%2B3.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/-Yh_aOGRhV2A/VQORZRQUHXI/AAAAAAAAHs8/ngAy89-DKoI/s1600/field%2Btrip%2B3.jpg" height="267" width="400" /></a></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/-iqe6mHTdtig/VQOTNEjWksI/AAAAAAAAHtk/vd6nRs0OklA/s1600/DSC_0152.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/-iqe6mHTdtig/VQOTNEjWksI/AAAAAAAAHtk/vd6nRs0OklA/s1600/DSC_0152.JPG" height="267" width="400" /></a></div>
When we got back to the classroom, someone asked what are we going to do with our notes. Well of course, we need to do something....<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/-g1Ig8hb05Ck/VQORRi5bkQI/AAAAAAAAHs0/YM-L3pDlvGE/s1600/field%2Btrip%2Bcollage.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/-g1Ig8hb05Ck/VQORRi5bkQI/AAAAAAAAHs0/YM-L3pDlvGE/s1600/field%2Btrip%2Bcollage.jpg" height="640" width="640" /></a></div>
<br />
I suggested we write an essay, a paragraph telling about what we saw. A few quick reviews about starting with your topic and a good introductory sentence, then following with your details and my students were off to write. Amazingly not five minutes and they were done....35 minutes and I had to make them stop to go to lunch. I did have to keep reminding them that we were inside and writing, because they did want to continue their discussions. I have some wonderful pieces of writing from them! Authentic writing that they were excited about.<br />
<br />
I have used that outdoor education area before. I can't take my students to a butterfly house at a zoo, so we build one out back, with a pop-up screen porch.<br />

<br />
I wrote about it <a href="http://merrykinderkapers.blogspot.com/2014/04/butterflies-up-close-and-personal.html" target="_blank">here</a>. My students go outside and into the tent to get up close and personal with the butterflies.<br />

<br />
Every community has places unique to that community where students can go and get some authentic learning. In second grade this year we are learning about money. Our principal has connections with a local bank. We are going to tour the bank and learn even more about our money, where it goes and why it is important to be able to count our money so we can save and spend wisely.<br />
<br />
No money for buses??....we have walked to our library before, taken a tour, and gotten an application for a library card.<br />
<br />
We have a hill close by loaded with fossils. It is a second grade tradition to go with local geologists and hunt for fossils.<br />
<br />
We have a NOAA weather station in town, and fourth grade went on a field trip there just last week....we are having them come to us. Bringing experts in is a great way to take a field trip without ever having to leave the building. Our local Fish and Wildlife guys come and do presentations for the classrooms upon request (so does the BLM and Forest Service). Dentists, Police Officers, and Fireman also like coming to school. The Lion's Club recently did a presentation for the second grade about the flag and every student was giving a little flag. That is another benefit to having someone come to you....they often bring giveaways. Kids love free stuff.<br />
<br />
My take away from this chapter....if your students' brains are seeming slow and sleepy, wake them up with a little change of scenery!<br />
